1. Chad Pastotnik, Printmaker, Deep Wood Press
Bio: Chad Pastotnik has a BFA in printmaking and focuses on intaglio copper and reliefwood engraving techniques which find their way into book forms as they are both highly detailed types of prints and lend themselves well to the smaller format. Chad has also had formal training in bookbinding as well as restoration and repair techniques, these skills led him to establish Deep Wood Press in 1992 along the banks of the Cedar River in northern Michigan’s beautiful Antrim County. Within the first few years there was a determined need for text for these book forms and the first letterpress and a few scattered cases of lead type began the formal act of publishing for Deep Wood. Since then the equipment, the workplaces and the vision have continued to evolve and improve and the ever continuing explorations of “the book as art” is at hand.
Over the past 19 years Deep Wood Press has produced over twenty five book titles and countless commissioned works and is present in some of the finest museums, libraries and university collections in the country including the Museum of Modern Art, NY and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Bio: My work is a combination of acrylic and enamel paints, spray paint, and found objects. The assembled sculptures are born through the integration of these materials with one another onto a wood panel. I utilize bone, rubber, wood, sinew, and various types of metal. All of the objects are recycled.
I aim to reveal the unseen beauty within these otherwise everyday objects, and to bring to attention the undeniable human impact on our natural surroundings. I question what is natural.
Each piece is an attempt to answer this, and in the end, becomes anything but natural. This work is a fabrication of my surrounding environment. It is an illusion that visually redefines an animal bone, a slab of rubber, or an old rusty piece of metal. It is an ode to all objects.

She uses various techniques, including fusing, etching and batiking, when working with the glass, The joy she feels creating with castoff materials has inspired her to build a cabin and gallery in the woods of northern Michigan, living “off grid” in the su, mmer months.

Bio: One of a Kind Re-purposed Vintage Inspired Jewelry. I have always been creative, and I love to paint and take photos. I am inspired by everything “vintage.” My Granmama loved her “costume” jewelry and those pieces are what I am using as inspiration for my designs (along with some funky stuff just for fun). I use old, orphaned pieces of jewelry and re-create new lovely one of a kind pieces. I am especially fond of using old brooches and creating statement necklaces. I have sold my jewelry pieces on Etsy for a year and a half. My jewelry creations have been featured in many blogs and various websites. My jewelry has been sold to folks all over the world. I love the beach, boogie boarding and snow. I live in Bellaire, Michigan, and own the Applesauce Inn Bed & Breakfast.

Bio: After graduating from high school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Peter Balestrieri won a scholarship to study art in Florence, Italy, under Italian artist, Pietro Annigoni, who created memorable portraits of Queen Elizabeth II and President John F. Kennedy, among others. During Peter’s time in Italy, he learned the fine points of oil painting, including preparation of the canvas, importance of perspective in drawing and painting, and compositional elements. Upon returning to Milwaukee, he was active in the art scene as an artist and a gallery owner. In mid-life he had the opportunity to take employment in Japan. While there, he was awarded two modern museum prizes for his oil paintings, and he held many exhibitions in Tokyo of his oils, drawings and watercolors. He decided to retire in Bellaire because of family connections but also because of “painter’s light.” In the past four years, he has exhibited at the Crooked Tree Art Center, earning prizes in 2006 and 2008, at the Jordan River Art Center, and at the Charlevoix Circle of Arts.

Bio: What a joy it is to live in northern Michigan and make pottery!
We moved to Antrim County in 1976 and started our pottery business in 1979. For 32 years Ron was the primary studio artist, building and glazing the pottery, while Cynthia concentrated on design and decoration. In 2007 after retiring from teaching Cynthia now gives her full attention to what she loves to do: make things out of clay. Our partnership in the studio has enabled us both to grow in both skills and creativity.
Our pottery is handbuilt using a mid-range stoneware clay. It is designed to be both functional and decorative. The glazes and stains are all food safe. It is electric fired to cone 5.
The pieces themselves are created using the clay slab process. Thin slabs of clay are rolled out and impressed with various textures. We get our textures from a wide variety of materials including fabrics, lace trims, crocheted work, textured papers, plastics, wood and metal. After the textures are impressed into the slabs, the pieces are constructed by cutting, forming and joining the slabs. After bisque firing, stains and glazes, chosen to enhance the textures, are applied by pouring, dipping and brushing. The pieces are then glaze fired.
We design our pieces to be used and hope that our customers enjoy having distinctive pottery that is built by hand and designed for daily use.
